Clubmark

The Club has now been awarded Clubmark accreditation.  This is a great achievement and is the first Tennis Clubmark award in Cumbria (jointly with Chatsworth) with only 2 other Tennis Clubs so far achieving it in the Northwest.  This means the LTA endorses and supports the tennis programmes our Club delivers on court and the policies and procedures we have in place off court.   It also includes recognition by Sport England and more information can be found at Clubmark or LTA Clubmark.

The presentation of the Clubmark award took place at the Club in July with representatives of Cumbria LTA, the SLDC and Dallam School, plus Club members and coaches.

Thanks and well done to all those who worked so hard to achieve this accreditation.

Club Tournament

STARTS SATURDAY AUGUST 16TH

FINALS DAY SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH – 1 PM.

Please make sure your games are played within the tournament deadlines.

The competitions are the same as last year except that in the Ladies and Men’s Doubles there is NO PARTNER CHOICE.  In these competitions you enter as an individual, the best players will be seeded (to avoid them being drawn together), and then an open draw for partners will be made.  This gives everyone a chance of having a good partner and some good competitive games.  This format is a trial for this year.

The Draw for partners in the Ladies, Men’s and Mystery Mixed will be made on Club night on Tuesday August 5th.  Don’t miss it!

ORDERS OF PLAY WILL GO UP BY FRIDAY AUGUST 8TH

Prize Bowling Evening

This was held at Burton Bowling Club – Burton in Kendal on Saturday 2nd August 2008. A hot pot supper followed at the Kings Arms Burton at 9 pm.  All games were doubles matches – bowls were provided.

Miscellaneous

Well done to Avril and Jodie Standing who spent a week at the LTA Summer County Cup in Cheltenham as part of the Cumbria County Ladies Team.

Save the Children Tournament

This took place on Sunday July 13th and 8 couples from 5 of the area Clubs took part.  The standard was extremely high with our own Avril Standing and David Smith taking the honours, after a close final with Sandra Eccles and Paddy Maher from Lancaster.  Avril and David are now entitled to progress further to Regional and possibly National Finals.  All the players enjoyed the sunny afternoon and refreshments – especially the strawberries.  Thanks to all the spectators who came down and a big thanks to all the participants – we raised £110 for Save the Children from entries and raffle tickets.

Clubhouse and Courts

A new door has been installed in the Clubhouse to complete the works for this year.  The lock will remain the same.  Thanks to Peter Moreton for organizing all the painting, new electrics and overall upgrading this season.

League Update (July)

Mixed – In between “rain-offs”, both teams are doing very well.  The First team have just recently beaten close rivals Kendal 11-1 and Windermere 9-3 and so are well on the way to retain their title as winners of the 1st League.  The Seconds are comfortably in the middle of the 1st League table.

Ladies – Matches seem to have been few and far between this summer.  Nevertheless, the First team are vying with Dalton for second place behind Lancaster.  The Second team will need to win a crucial match with Windermere in order to stay up.

Men’s – the Firsts are rolling relentlessly on and with 3 matches to go are within touching distance of the title.  Even with key players missing, the team has kept its strength with the return of Nick Davis and an excellent performance at North Lonsdale by Jonny Hyman.  The Seconds sadly, are now 5 points adrift of Bowerham and barring a miracle, will be competing in the 2nd Division next season.  The Thirds seem to be struggling with injuries, weather and inability to get a team out.
